Troubleshooting PrintBoss issues with Dynamics GP

Mekorma MICR is probably the most popular check printing third party product used with GP for check printing. It is integrated with GP seamlessly. However, another alternative is PrintBoss by Wellspring Software with GP.

Recently, I was troubleshooting a PrintBoss issue. The report was not printing in the correct format. Instead, a GP report was printing.

Here is the checklist of the items to check:

1.       Verify that the “Stub on Top” report is being used in GP:

If check is being printed in the GP report format, the first thing you can verify is that the Stub On Top format is selected in the check format.

PrintBoss replaces Check stub on top report with a modified report.

Verify default format in Payables Management set up(Microsoft Dynamics GP menu >> Tools >> Setup >> Purchasing >> Payables)

Confirm it in Print Payables Checks Window as well. User might have accidentally changed it while printing check

2.       Check users have permission the modified report

Verify that user has permission to print the modified report.

Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports window (Microsoft Dynamics GP menu >> Tools >> Setup >> System >> Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports )

Reports modified by PrintBoss are highlighted below

3.       Verify the Named Printer setup

Verify that Checks are printed to PrintBoss Printer in Assign Named Printers window (Microsoft Dynamics GP menu >> Tools >> Setup >> System >> Named Printers)

The PrintBoss Payables – Transaction Check/Cheque Printer and Payables – Computer Checks/Cheques Printer should be going to PrintBoss printer.

You can further check the Printer by clicking the Printer ID link

For further troubleshooting, issues related to named printer you can refer to the extensive blog post  Troubleshooting Named Printers Issues by David Musgrave.

4.       Make sure user is printing the report to printer

The PrintBoss driver is called only when the report is printed to the printer. When check is printed to printer, the PrintBoss driver name should be visible in the Print dialog

If you see PrintBoss driver in the Print Dialog and check is still not printed, you should look into the PrintBoss installation and setup.
